Carabao Cup
The 2024–25 Carabao Cup, officially known as the EFL Cup, is the 65th edition of England’s premier knockout football competition open to all clubs in the Premier League and the English Football League. The tournament began in August 2024 and will conclude with the final on Sunday, March 16, 2025, at Wembley Stadium in London.
The competition started with 70 teams in the first round, consisting of 24 clubs from League Two, 24 from League One, and 22 from the Championship. The second round saw the remaining two Championship clubs and 13 Premier League teams not involved in European competitions join, while the third round introduced the seven Premier League clubs participating in European tournaments. As the competition progressed, the fourth round narrowed the teams further, setting the stage for the quarter-finals, where only Premier League clubs remained.
The semi-finals saw Newcastle United and Liverpool emerge victorious. Newcastle dominated Arsenal with a 4-0 aggregate victory, while Liverpool overturned a first-leg deficit to defeat Tottenham Hotspur 4-1 on aggregate. This set up a highly anticipated final between Newcastle and Liverpool at Wembley Stadium.
Newcastle United, under the leadership of Eddie Howe, will be competing in their second Carabao Cup final in three years. The Magpies are aiming to win their first major trophy since 1969, hoping to break their long-standing trophy drought. Liverpool, the defending champions, will be led by Arne Slot as they seek to retain the title and secure a record-extending 11th EFL Cup trophy.
